There is a slew of advice, articles and blogs that suggest having a deep red wine with your summer barbeque. But hot weather isn’t always ideal for a heavy red; sometimes you just want a lighter white wine. But most of the time, a white wine is just plain wrong with sticky sweet BBQ chicken or other grilled items. A light wispy Italian white wine will more or less vanish when put up against the deep smoky flavor of grilled items. Try a soft rounded white wine with bright tones of tropical fruits; though you might want to still go a little easy on the chili, vinegar and other heavy BBQ flavors. This doesn’t mean that cutting it out completely but it does help the wine shine through more if you go with a lighter BBQ style.
So try a white wine the next time you grill, you could really enjoy it. Just remember that a lighter white doesn’t make good friends with a heavy barbeque and that dry whites are not good with a smoky grilled flavor. But raise your wine glasses with a soft tropical hinted white wine, and you have a great summer evening.
