Sardinia is an island off the coast of Italy and the second largest in the Mediterranean. Those who live on this island are reported to live six years longer than average and now much research is going into their diet and lifestyle. Just as with many Italian diets the habitants of Sardinia enjoy wine, especially deep red wines, on a daily basis along with fine cheese and fresh wholegrain bread.
The basis of this diet is a very dark red wine, Cannonau, that is pared with cheese made with milk from grass fed animals. This wine is so dark many refer to it as a black wine but it is full of antioxidants. While the cheese is packed with more protein than average cheese making for a healthy basis for the diet that fits well into the wine lifestyle. Wine lovers should consider having a glass of dark wine a day along with some protein rich cheese on their cheese boards each day to incorporate the best of this diet.
