While science advances, it is constantly changing the wine industry with each new finding. From studies that show just how beneficial to the body wine can be in moderation to what gives wine its flavor and how to pare it with foods best. The latest news out of the science world regarding wine is now debunking the theory that the vines absorb minerals from the soil, which in turn ends up in the grapes and the wine to give each area a distinct flavor. Vineyards all around the world have used this idea to market their wine with claims of excellent well-managed soil that creates a pleasing effect on the palate.
The Geological Society of America recently introduced research papers that showed evidence that while partially true the minerality of a wine does not affect its flavor. This study shows that while the wine that enthusiasts bring home from a region in their wine totes does have traces of minerals those traces are too small to be noticed by even the most sensitive taste buds. Of course to a true wine lover this is not news that will be too upsetting. Wine from a particular region is to be enjoyed no matter what gives it that wonderful flavor.
