Hosting a wine and cheese party is a wonderful way to spend time with your friends and share your favorite brands and types of wine with them. After going to the wine cellar and carefully selecting exactly which bottles you will open that night it would be a shame to serve a cheese that does not compliment its particular attributes.
There are many general guidelines that can help you to potentially put just the right types of cheese on those cheese boards for your party but those are just guidelines and sometimes leave you hoping for better advice. Things like serving hard cheeses with red wine and soft cheeses with white wine are too basic to really get a good selection. Or you can always stick to the adage of cheese and wine from the same region but this too leaves a lot of potential combinations out.
When selecting your cheese to serve with your wine try and use bold cheeses with bolder, stronger wines. While serving those subtle cheeses with the softer more subtle wines. Many quality cheese shops will have several types of cheese that you can try out while you shop and many will even serve wine with them for you to get an idea of what they go with best. When you find combinations that work well together remember them and try to find other similar cheeses to go with that particular wine.
