A Quick Guide to Thanksgiving Wines

Choosing wines to serve at a Thanksgiving table can be a stressful decision.  Turkey, a challenging bird (with it's flavor-disparate white and dark meats), never seems to pair well with any one wine.   The traditional side dishes of sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, and stuffing only lend to a meal that can often seem impossible to pair.  Here are a few ideas that can help to alleviate your Turkey Day wine angst.

  • Serve both a red and a white at the table, with 2 appropriate glasses per table setting.  Guests can choose to enjoy a small glass of each, or pair their meal according to their own palates.
  • Select wines that are seasonal, fresh, and fruity, like a Beaujolais Nouveau, or a crisp Gewurtzaminer.  Both are approachable and affordable choices that are sufficiently compatible with food.
  • Last but not least - Simply select a special wine for the holiday, and enjoy the wine for wine's sake, rather than worrying about achieving the perfect food and wine pairing.

Happy Thanksgiving!
